Big Hairy Audatious Goal: Redeem the word "SOUVENIR"

Posted by Trip Wolfskehl on

I recently signed up for a business coach / consultant to help us make Maritime Tribes into the company that it can and should be in the eyes of God. I mean, we're only here for a short bit, and "we'll all be dead soon" as I like to say around the shop, so we might as well have a go, am I right?!

The first task of truly making a great company, according to Scott Asadorian my business coach, is to create our Big Hairy Audacious Goal - "BHAG". This is a concept Jim Collins originally came up with that is defined as a 10 year goal that carries a huge, daunting challenge—like a big mountain to climb.

A strong BHAG has:

  • A clear finish line: You know when you’ve achieved it.
  • An ambitious challenge: It stretches far beyond business as usual and can seem impossible - "Within a decade we'll have put a man on the moon."
  • An emotional pull: People understand it, believe in it, and want to pursue it.

So, Trip, what's the BHAG for Maritime Tribes, you might be asking. Is Maritime going to put a man on the moon? Solve world hunger? Cure cancer? Well, the point is to make the biggest difference with the God given talent and position that you're ACTUALLY in. And, we're in souvenir manufacturing. With that as our reality, how about this:

Maritime Tribes 2036 BHAG: Redeem the word souvenir.

In a world increasingly filled with disposable nonsense, we create real objects to be cherished.

Souvenir: (French: se souvenir) to remember – Maritime is in the business of helping people remember that moment when people, place and time magically come together to create a spot weld memory.

You might be compelled to ask - how do you know when that word souvenir has been 'redeemed' - I'll agree that it's hard to measure, but we do have strong methodology and measureables. So if you're truly interested in looking at those, following along on progress, and even want to check in with us in 2036 (LOL) to see how we did, please reach out and I'll share with you the milestones: trip@maritimetribes.com

So let’s get to work - because those moments when people, place and time magically come together deserve something beautiful to remember them by.
